Review Film Swiss Army Man (2016)

To put it simple, let's start with the fact that this is the highest rated movie of my entire life (yet). 9/10, for a film that focus on life between a man that is stranded on an island, and ended up befriending a dead man. (yes, you heard it right)

What the fuck?

Well yeah, that's the true premise for the whole film. It stars a guy named Hank Thompson, who is stranded at an island. (the naming is obviously not inspired by 2002's Tom Hanks Castaway lul)

At the very beginning of the film, we can see that he want to do suicide, but shocked seeing a man in his suit, lying on the shore of the island. Hank approached the guy, and yeah, he is a corpse. Hank tried to resuscitate him, but the dead man distracts him by farting a lot.

Then, as the tide begins to wash the corpse away, Hank watches as its flatulence propels the corpse around on the surface of the water. Hank immediately mounts the corpse and rides it across the ocean like a jet ski, landing on a mainland shore but far from civilization.

And yeah, that's how they met. The film continues, and at one point, the corpse began to talk. He introduces himself as Manny. This scares the shit out of Hank, but eventually Manny became “Swiss Army knife man” for Hank, because he can do anything. He is so powerful. He can shoot things with his mouth.

But there is this one caveat; Manny did not remember anything from his previous life. He continuously asks Hank about the meaning of everything he saw. “What is home?” Manny said. This force Hank to rethink everything, so he can explain it to Manny.

Over the course of their journey, Hank teaches Manny the joys of eating out, going to movies, and partying, using crudely-constructed props and sets made from plants and garbage they find. This is somehow entertaining to me, because well, I mean, who the hell in the world live with a walking corpse.

My thoughts

This film is really surrealist. But there are also element of comedy and romance involved. And also some talks about manhood parts too. The film has a whole lot amount of absurd jokes, especially fart jokes. But that doesn't ruin the entire mood in the film; in fact, it adds to the context.

Hank is played by a guy called Paul Dano. I never knew him, but yeah the acting in this film is good. Good enough to give you an award for it. Meanwhile, Manny is played by the “Harry Potter guy”, Daniel Radcliffe. I liked how Dan try to clear his stereotype of being a guy with glasses. He gave it all in this film. It's hard to be a guy that's both being dead and alive, but somehow he's able to pull it greatly.

The soundtrack on this film is top-notch. It's instrumental and somehow uplifting to me. Idk why.

To conclude this review, I want to give you the perspective of how Manny sees things in the world. Here is one sentence that still stuck in my mind.

Manny: Maybe everyone's a little bit ugly. And maybe we're all just ugly, dying sacks of shit, and maybe all it'll take is one person to just be okay with that, and then the whole world will be dancing and singing and farting, and everyone will feel a little bit less alone.

Rating: 9/10
